What We Do

Diseases of the digestive tract are responsible for the hospitalization of more people in the United States than any other group of disorders. Gastroenterology involves the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the digestive tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, liver, gallbladder and biliary system. Some of the more common problems include peptic ulcer disease, heartburn and reflux, colon cancer/polyps, gallstones and inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

A complete gastrointestinal evaluation usually includes specialized studies and procedures in addition to thorough interview and physical examination. X-ray (barium studies of the digestive system) and blood studies may be ordered and reviewed as indicated. Many problems of the digestive tract cannot be diagnosed by an x-ray. Scopes allow the thorough examination of the inside of the digestive tract to detect abnormal tissue that might be the cause of the problem. Endoscopy produces images on a TV monitor that can then be recorded to document the findings.
